Disgraceful
The Palestinians launch a peaceful protest, a strike, against the Israeli raid on their prison and what do they get?
Now we tell them to take the road of peace. We tell them terrorism is never justified. We tell them to adopt peaceful means of protest.
And when they do what do we do? We laugh at them and call them a "dumb lot" and "dumb bastards"
Truly sad, pathetic and disgraceful.
At least the poster acknowledges the Palestinians fundamental powerlessness, but the comments are worse:Now, this is the bit that doesn't make much or even any sense to me. How exactly is going on strike against your own people going to do anything to hurt the Israelis? Normally strikers will target those that will be able to create some sort of pressure against the people that they perceive as having wronged them. But, why would the Israelis care that the Palestinians are on strike?
Duh.
Think of it like a convicted murderer/rapist going on a hunger strike. And:
They really are a dumb lot If it wasnt so tragic it would be hillarious.Their thought patterns are really quite screwed up.Brains addled with hatred that results in some bizzare behaviour. And
Dumb bastards - no wonder why blowing yourself up to get 72 virgins seems like a great idea to them.Yup, they were there minding their goats and sheep on the land they had occupied for centuries and then, at the whim of the British government, they get turfed off that land and out of their homes. After many years during which their legitimate grievances are ignored, some become terrorists.
Now we tell them to take the road of peace. We tell them terrorism is never justified. We tell them to adopt peaceful means of protest.
And when they do what do we do? We laugh at them and call them a "dumb lot" and "dumb bastards"
Truly sad, pathetic and disgraceful.

Flashback 1949. UN peace conference Lausanne. Israel agrees to negotiate Count Bernadotte's proposals for partition of Palestine. Next day, Israel recognised by UN. Next day, Israel reneges. The assassinated UN mediator's proposals die with him. Honest dealing or entry by fraud?
See A History of Palestine, Ilan Pappe, Haifa University.
"Brains addled with hatred that results in some bizzare behaviour"
Is that what they call projection?
Anonymous,
I'm curious why you ignore the rather significant event requring the 'peace conference': many Arab nations plus helpful Palestinian Arabs invading the newly declared (under a UN plan agreed to by NZ, and based on demographic analysis of the area) State of Israel in 1948 with the intent of wiping Jews off the face of the map. They were defeated, and the newly formed Israel kept some of the land it won in the war. Tough shit for any civilians involved? Yes indeed. The fault of one year old Israel? No. Unless you're an anti-semitic conspiracy theorist ignorant prick, of course.
I am also curious why you don't acknowledge various related facts leading up to the formation of Israel in 1947... such as the Brits allowing the eastern Palestinian Mandate (present day Jordan) to ban Jews, and the continuing violent persecution of Jews in Jerusalem, not to mention the local Muslim leader running off to recruit for the Yugoslav SS division. All of these facts are indicative of a general "lets kill them all" attitude towards Jews in the region, and here you are acting politically and voluntarily on behalf of those intent on the genocide.
It's like you're professing support for the KKK based on reading some of their propaganda.
To put it simply, the history of Israeli-Arab relations no more starts with the 1949 conference than Jew-German relations started with the Treaty of Versailles following WW1.
As for O'Neill. Well if you can't understand Palestinians striking because of anything Israel does is self-defeating, then you are hopelessy lost on what constitutes useful political action.
If Hamas or various other Palestinian terrorist groups were serious about representing the best interests of Palestinian Arabs they would be planning and carrying out proper attacks on Israeli military targets in the Palestinian Territories, and never intentionally attacking Israel civilians. But they are not, therefore they do not deserve the respect of anyone. This strike is just more of the same kind of stupid self-defeating behaviour. Since Hamas controls the Gaza Strip, its not to much of a stretch to think they're the ones behind it - don't you think?
Oh and the "prison" raided by the Israeli's operated more like a 5-star hotel than anything else. Just what you'd expect from a group of people who operate more like Mafiosi than rational self-interested citizens. A fake prison.
Also sarcasm = sarcasm. Sarcasm != hatred. ('!=' means "does not"). And if it did, then your multiple similarly lame sarcastic posts on 'SH' are indicative of a personality so seriously unhinged you should see a pyschiatrist immediately to save us from the possible consequences of your "hatred" for 'us'.
Al
Thanks for talking about everything except what I said.
Did the Israelis do what a respected historian says they did at the Lausanne conference or did they not?

Am traveling to NZ in April. Looking forward to trip. Was enjoying reading this blog in preparation. Not going to subscribe to this anti-semetic blog anymore.
Anti-semitic behaviour clearly doesn't bother you all that much, anonymous, since you haven't bothered taking the time to figure out how to spell it.
Ur in present-day Iraq is the real cradle of Israel being the home of Abraham. What if the Jews returned there leaving Palestine to the Palestinians? After all,one more contender in the Iraqi free-for-all will make little difference.
But I can spell Jack Ass.
That'll be useful when you sign your immigration forms on arrival in NZ. And don't forget to bring lots of fresh fruit with you off the plane.
