Who would have guessed?
"It has been the world's largest exporter of goods every year since it overtook the U.S. in 2003. Its trade surplus was six times that of China in 2004," begins this FT article. Almost unbelievably it's talking about Germany.
It is a little-known fact that in spite of Germany's unexceptional economic data, no other industrial nation has so successfully harnessed the opportunities offered by an interconnected global economy. It's certainly not the impression you get. Germany exports nearly as much as Britain, France and the Netherlands combined.
This country of 80 million, often painted as angst-ridden, risk-averse and allergic to change, has been the world's largest exporter of goods every year since it overtook the U.S. in 2003.

I don't get why you would be surprised about that. I drive my Mini/Merc/Porsche/VW with Continental tyres, use my Siemens phone, swallow Bayer/Schering/Merck pills, watch my Loewe TV, drink Beck's beer, wear adidas and Puma shoes and Boss clothes, invest with Deutsche Bank, ship goods via DHL and use SAP software (plus all the chemicals from BASF and steel products from ThyssenKrupp used by intermediary companies) There is simply very little competition for all that.
You don't eat Tempo-Erbsen with Spreegurken and smoke Sprachlos Zigarren, then?
No, but I don't mind a bit of German sausage in me once in a while.
Not Currywurst, I trust.
Hey, I'm a man, I can take anything.
