Getting the message

A couple of months ago, I got a call at teatime, as you do.

The caller was from Telecom, telling me that if I got my toll calls through his company, I could keep on my "cheaper" plan. Otherwise I would have to pay more for my line rental.

At least that's what I thought he said. His Asian accent was so strong I could only guess at some things. He was so hard to understand that I asked him to send me something in the post. Needless to say, nothing arrived. Till today.

Spokeswoman Sarah Berry said messageline was an old plan, and culling it was part of a move to simplify Telecom's product range.

Messageline costs $38.25 and covers line rental and an answerphone. Customers can either move to an anytime plan for $39. 85 or a homeline plan for $42.20.

I hope a lot of people will be like me: as alternatives keep arriving I just may be coming to the conclusion that Telecom is old option, and culling it could be part of a move to simplifying my product range.

The sheer marketing cynicism of claiming to your customers that perpetually rebranding and redefining your products has anything to do with simplifying things amuses and infuriates me by turns. It sounds more like a continuation of Gattung's description of Telecom using "confusion as its chief marketing tool" and that being fine, except for the customer, of course.

And Telescum are streamlining their staffing too.
Obviously Granny Herald has done so already.
Why else was their P1 lead on the Telescum job cuts written by the Otago Daily Times?

I too got this letter and its breathtaking dishonesty and fuzzy marketing bullshit took my breath away!
It wasnt till I rang that I found out that the plan I was on was being deleted,(they neglected to mention this) and surprise surprise both of the "new improved options" were more expensive. My message service is also rising in price because it is "going to be more efficient", just how it can record messages more efficiently escapes me. I pursued this right up the telecom chain to the Project Manager, but got absolutely no satisfaction. I, too, will be deserting them asap.
