Does the ‘D’ in D-Link stand for Dead?

Since my last post we’ve had a Telecom engineer in, carried out isolation tests, disconnected Sky Digital, had all of our phone jacks checked, and I’ve spent over two hours on the phone to Xtra. No dice. Our broadband connection is stable for just minutes at a time — in the time it has taken to write and post this, it has dropped out a dozen times. The guy on the Xtra help desk has suggested buying a new router and says I will be credited for my D-Link DSL-G604T as soon as I return it and its replacement, which can’t hold a connection, either. The problem is, the only wireless routers Xtra supports are by D-Link, making the prospect of installing a new router terrifying in the extreme — Xtra can’t even provide adequate support for the D-Link products, let alone anything else. Try ringing D-Link for help and unless you’re an Xtra technician you’re led circuitously and infuriatingly back to Xtra. The suggestion that some settings were altered in our line profile to the exchange as part of Telecom’s “unleashing” neither coincides with the start of our problems (last Monday morning) nor has downgrading our profile helped. Xtra’s help desk guy spoke to D-Link, which concedes it’s having trouble with this device, but hasn’t been able to get to the bottom of the problem. Is anyone else out there using the D-Link DSL-G604T and unable to hold an internet connection for longer than a few minutes? It ought to be abundantly clear that Telecom is in trouble. The fact I had no problems with Xtra wireless broadband before “unleashing” merely underscores the fact that it has bitten off more than it can chew.

Thanks, David. What model is it, and have you had any support from D-Link or your ISP?

I got fed up having to fiddle with the G604T and swapped to a Dynalink RTA1025W which so far has behaved.

Never had these issues with a Cisco 827 or the old Nokias.

You may find that upgrading the firmware on the D-Link helps, but in my case it brought on another even more annoying problem. Have posted about it here with a link to NZBC.

Chris, Geekzone has a forum item that might help on the DL Router/Wireless hub you're having problems with.

Here for geekzone

At the bottom of the post there's some discussion about the settings not "sticking". It's also worth noting that a Google search for "DSL-G604T problems" brings up 70,200 results. This alone suggests that is better to get another router.

Thanks, Tony and Juha. I did have terrible problems installing both the D-Link router and the wireless adaptors on two other PCs on this network (with the help of various Xtra help desk people, I hasten to add), but I don't think this particular problem has anything to do with the router settings.

Again: the router was working perfectly until last Monday, 20 November. Now, suddenly it and the replacement router supplied have stopped working. It could simply be one of the 70,200 DSL-G604T problems which has started manifesting itself, but I suspect it has more to do with something Xtra/Telecom has done to our line or port settings at the exchange - it seems counterintuitive for two routers with serial numbers a couple of thousand units apart to suffer a fault that manifests itself in exactly the same way... Why was one of them working perfectly before?

604T worked perfectly with ihug. Moved it to office and connected to xtra 2 weeks ago and fine....as of tuesday this week laptop keeps timing out on most sites however email fine. Office PC's OK..is this something to do with signal stength of individual PC's???

If the problem begins with your ADSL light going out, anonymous, it can't have anything to do with your PC's signal strength. Check the signal strength of your wireless connection. If it's ADSL, the problem lies between the DSL-G604T and the exchange.

Xtra's latest explanation to me is that the problem may be a card fault or incompatibility at the exchange, but they can't state that categorically.

Interesting reading.

I'm on Telstra DSL, but have had similar problems since around the time of the unleashing.

Looking at the connection log, it seems that it struggles to maintain synchronisation for the DSL signal.

I picked up the G604T as we had connection issues with an older modem. Ironically, that modem seems to work better now.

I don't think it has much to do with the wireless, as I connection via ethernet. My best guess would be it has something to do with ADSL2.

The G604T is a great little unit, its sensitivity on the adsl signal isnt as great as others, but this is because it is running on the AR7 chipset, which is tuned for optimal speed. Line problems are very common, and once you start upping the speed on a connection the problems become more and more common (or problematic) as there is a greater demand on the line.

Im pretty sure you can check your line/signal stats in the web config page somewhere, this shows your line attenuation, etc.

I personally have one of these units and love it, much quicker than the rest and its an all in one unit.

I too have had an unstable conection since Xtra was 'Unleashed'. My wireless was working fine then all of a sudden I would loose connection and have to reboot the D-Link router. Both my PC and laptop suffer the same problems and Xtra have said they will replace the router but from what I have read, that won't solve the problem.

I sympathise, Anonymous, I really do. Apparently, Telecom yesterday replaced the card in the exchange, and since then my original router has been working perfectly. I have yet to find out from the broadband help desk team leader whether a faulty card was to blame the whole time. If it was, I'm going to be seriously pissed off, as I've definitely lost productivity (i.e. business) since the problems began on 20 November. Telecom also decided to do this work without informing me first, so yesterday morning I had no internet connection at all. The Downer technician, however, did call to say the work had been completed... Let's hope this 'run of good luck' (and my connection) holds.

Howdy all,

My father upgraded from IHUG dialup to IHUG adsl and everything was grand until around the time of Telecom's "Unleashed" was dumped on the unsuspecting DSLAMs. I have a suspicion that it has something to do with the extra load on the DSLAMs installed in the exchanges. Perhaps a Telecom Tech is reading all this and can comment.

Cheers
Julz

I just bought a G604T and am having the same problems with my Telstra service --- frequent DSL line drops. It's really really annoying. Will calling Telstra get me anywhere?

I'm using a G604T with Xnet and am having the same trouble, just won't hold a connection for longer than about 10 minutes, it was okay at the start but it seems to be getting worse and worse and holding for less and less each time.

I have an issue with mine not being able to contact outside line, but none of yours.
