Lawn bowled
Whose moronic idea was to fence off one of the few green areas adjacent to Queen St, dig it up and plant sunflowers?
Oh I see.
Does the Auckland City Council intend to remove the iron fence and return the area to grass for people to sit on once the flowers fade into autumn?
Does it realise that cities overseas are voraciously gobbling up residential and commercial plots that become vacant for green patches to patchwork the taupe and beige? People need a place to eat their sushi away from the fumes and disease-ridden air conditioning.
Were the citizens asked if they wanted a display above a respite?
What a beautiful conservation job the council has done in the old post office - the tiles are magnificent, comforting memories of the past on the way to the glasshouse and the trains.
They just need to think of the real needs of the people. All the time.

Mrs Smith over at Idle Vice disagrees. And has some nice photos to prove her point.
I understood that a couple of years ago the car park below the new 'sunflower field' was found to be unsafe (damp?) and had to have steel beams added to it so it wouldn't cave in.
For that reason, they couldn't have people milling around on the grass above, so it was fenced off, and the area became overgrown with grass and weeds.
So the sunflowers are a welcome improvement!
That Aotea Squate area is such a problem for the council. I think many would love the whole middle of the square to be a grassy area rather than a concrete area.
I do think their market on Fridays & Saturdays is great though.
Were people all going to jump up and down a la China and the earthquake?
Fix the carpark and grass the whole area then, or leave some over to that chalky petanque field stuff so that markets can go over the top of them. Sorted.
The council are still trying to decide if they should fix it as the initial estimate was approx 25 million and within 4 weeks it had leapt to 135 million, all of which would have to be paid by the ratepayer. After the rate hike debacle and the self authorised business class travel junkets telling us our rates will explode yet again would be political suicide.
