TVNZ's bean-counters are "profoundly anti-journalist", says one of its staff members. Maybe.
They will be profoundly anti-audience if they go ahead with serious cuts to the programme-making side of their business.
The only point of TVNZ is to make local programmes, high-end and low, important and forgettable, otherwise the broadcaster is entirely irrelevant. We've been raised on foreign imports; it would take very little for many people to switch off our culture altogether.

We have a culture? What time's that on...?
Leeky snob
The problem is TVNZ is trying to satisfy two masters- a need to offer 'public service broadcasting' and to make a buck through advertising.
It is amazing how much damage Lairbour has wreaked on our national broadcaster.
With all those journos losing there jobs, well there goes the channels' ability to hold the government of the day to account.
But considering the many cock-ups by Clark and co, this is obviously what Liarbour wants.
We have seen how over the restrictions on election funding how much Liarbour hates free speech, so now it attacks the state news channel so it cannot do its job properly and will have to rely on Liarbour lie/spin machine more for news.
I bet those jouinos who gave Liarbour such an easy run in election 2005 will be regretting their folly.
And I bet National could never get away with damaging TVNZ as much as Liarbour has.
The ebst solution woukld be to flog off TV2 and just have TV1 offering more BBC-style quality programs.

Hey! That's what I was gonna say. Except I'd say use RNZ as a model, not the BBC. We don't have the population and resources to do the BBC well here, but we might pull off a good Nat Rad on TV kinda thing.
I recall hearing many years ago that Labour governments always mess with the state-owned media, particularly TV, but National governments do it more subtly, by forcing them to think about profits instead of quality broadcasting. Funny how L becomes like N more everyday, and N becomes more like L was in opposition - a waste of space.
Maybe Winston Peters would buy TV2? He always defends keeping it.
