Traffic

I can’t imagine why anyone would wish to visit the City of Snails – please don’t, we have enough people – but for those who must, Mrs Smith has some sensible tips on driving in Auckland traffic here.

When I saw the heading 'Traffic' I thought it was about the band.

Which doesn't quite show my age, since I was 3 when they kicked off.

Only problem with Ms Vice's analysis of Ak traffic is the references to going faster than 100kperhour.

When does the opportunity to do that arise? 2am??

When the motorway is moving (it happens) any fool doing less than 120 in the fast lane earns ire and flashing lights from those behind.

Traffic actually marvellous over Christmas, when everyone buggers off on holiday.

This morning, at the bottom of our street on Dominion Road, I observed the cretinous driver of a ute blast his horn at another driver who had had the temerity to indicate right and turn legally into Burnley Terrace, simply because the vehicle didn't quite fit entirely into the turning lane and the ute driver had to turn his wheel slightly to avoid hitting the car before it turned. Only in Auckland.

I'm with Mrs Smith. Auckland is at its best when all the Aucklanders leave. It's like Paris in August. Except for the food, obviously, and also the art, buildings, shops, women and, quite possibly, the men (I wouldn't know), and oh, everything else.

I wonder when Wellington is at is best. From a great distance, I suppose.

Wellington - well, a bit like Auckland, its usually great between Christmas Eve and whenever people get back from their holidays.

In fact, I seem to recall your Mr Broatch saying something along those lines after a visit.

Actually, at its best is on a glorious autumn afternoon: the winds are usually still, its warm but not too warm, the hills are etched clear in the light and the splashes from people diving from the pontoons in Oriental Bay are like salty crystel.
