As Sir Ed said when asked if he thought George Mallory might have reached the top of Everest before him, it's not just about getting higher than anyone else, it's about coming down safely as well.

Maybe we can claim he's a kiwi or something. Trade him for Russell Crowe.

Unfortunately anonymous's paraphrasing of Sir Ed also belittles the work of Christopher Marlowe, Billie Holliday, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Jaco Pastorius, Scott Fitgerald, Ernest Hemingway, John Belushi and others too numerous to mention. Not that I'm comparing them with an item of stationery, mind you.

Well Rob, if you listen closely to the first take of Robert Johnson’s 'Love In Vain', recorded on 20 June 1937, there is a scratchy spoken voiceover before the song starts of Johnson saying (presumably to the sound engineer, but who knows): “I wanna go with our next one myself”.

With characteristic obliqueness, I hereby posit that as the knocked-off bastard's evolutionary precursor.
