Acronymonious
I’ve been reading and enjoying Michael King’s The Penguin History of New Zealand for some time. And about time, too—I’ve had the book for years but it didn’t quite make it to the top of my reading pile until last November. It contains much that is thought-provoking, and (to me, at least) an unexpectedly high percentage that is entertaining and funny. I particularly enjoyed this passage:New Zealand women organised themselves into small leaderless groups for consciousness-raising meetings. By 1972 around 20 women’s liberation groups were operating throughout the country, spawning a forest of new acronyms. NOW (National Organisation for Women) was a good one, as was WOW (Wellington Organisation for Women). A Southland Organisation for Women presented problems, however, and was quietly abandoned as an option.Can NZBC readers contribute any other true acronyms with unfortunate connotations?

I do remember from years ago (visiting the library as a child), seeing a magazine called AIDS (no idea if it was an acronym - sorry). It was for a paraplegic association, if I remember rightly. I am quite sure it must go under some other name now.
